FL Kids, 10 And 11, Pulled Over In Mom's Car 200 Miles From Home

Authorities said the children were headed to California after their mother in North Port took away their electronic devices.

GAINESVILLE, FL — Two Florida siblings, ages 10 and 11, were pulled over by Alachua County deputies Thursday after taking their mother's car and driving more than 200 miles, according to authorities and a report.

The Alachua County Sheriff's Office said deputies spotted the sedan traveling on Interstate 75 in Alachua just before 4 a.m. Thursday. According to an Associated Press report, the children's mother had reported the car stolen four hours earlier from their North Port home.

Thinking they were dealing with car thieves, deputies pulled the car over, drew their guns and ordered the car's occupants to step out, authorities told the AP.

"Much to their surprise, deputies observed a 10-year-old male driver exit the vehicle, along with his 11-year-old sister," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

Authorities later learned the children had been reported missing to North Port police. According to AP's report, the girl was upset with their mom for taking away her electronic devices, so her brother was driving her to California.

After interviewing the children, detectives told the AP there was no indication the kids were mistreated by their mother.

Their mother picked up the kids from Alachua County and declined to press charges, authorities said. Police did not release their names.
