• 7 New UNESCO World Heritage Sites Worth Traveling For In 2026 (forbes.com) — Folkston’s gateway role just got bigger: the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, whose main entrance sits near town, is now a newly named UNESCO World Heritage Site. The designation recognizes the swamp’s globally important peatlands, wildlife, and paddling opportunities, and places Folkston alongside world-famous destinations from Normandy’s D-Day beaches to Greece’s Mount Olympus.
