Lettuce Sold In FL Recalled Over Possible Salmonella Risk

The recall affects whole heads of lettuce sold by Orlando-based Kalera, according to an FDA alert.

ORLANDO, FL — A Florida-based company has issued a voluntary recall for hundreds of heads of lettuce due to potential salmonella contamination, according to an alert posted Thursday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall affects 633 cases of Krunch, Butter, and Romaine whole-head lettuce produced by Kalera Public Limited Co. of Orlando, according to the alert. The lettuce was distributed to a small number of retail and food service customers in Florida.

According to the alert, the affected lettuce has lot codes 001293 and 001294 on the label and was sold under the Kalera brand. See photos of the recalled products.

Routing testing procedures alerted the company to the possible presence of salmonella, which prompted the company to report the issue to the FDA. So far, no illnesses have been reported.

No other Kalera products are affected by the recall.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal illnesses in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Those infected with salmonella may have symptoms including fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

If consumers have the recalled products in their refrigerators, they should throw them away and not consume them. To obtain a refund or for more information, contact Kalera at 407-574-8204 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
