Ceiling Collapse Displaces 7 In Retirement Community

Heavy rains drenched the insulation and attic areas causing the drywall to give way at the Sun City complex, officials said.

SUN CITY, FL – Seven condominium units in a retirement community were evacuated this morning around midnight, and seven individuals were forced to move out after ceilings collapsed inside four of the residences.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews were called to the Aston Gardens Retirement Community on the 220 block of Courtyard Boulevard in Sun City after ceiling damage was reported in four units.

Investigators determined that roof repairs previously were underway at the property, and that Wednesday evening's storms caused water to enter the attics, the agency said. Water-saturated insulation and drywall led the ceilings to give way.

Crews said four units suffered ceiling damage, however, three additional units inside the building were evacuated "out of an abundance of caution," officials said.

The complex and the contractor made lodging arrangements for the seven displaced residents, and no injuries were reported.
