Make Like a Skyscraper and Sway

When life comes at you, do you sway with the upheaval or brace yourself against the force? One leads to the balance. The other can lead to collapse.

When life's upheavals come at you, do you sway or brace?

Intuitively, we often know when we are overwhelmed, overtaxed and just “over it.” Yet, in our culture, we are taught to go, go, go. Suck it up. Shake it off. Don’t complain. We push ourselves beyond capacity without a second thought compromising our body’s ability to rebalance. This impacts our body’s ability to heal and leads to a state of dis-ease.

To sustain optimal well being our body, mind and spirit consistently strive for balance. And yet, balance is not static. Nor is a destination. We can’t plant our legs, hold fast with all our might to brace and say we are “balanced.” And, gosh darn it we are going to stay that way because we have “things to do.”

Instead of balance in our natural energy flow, we are holding. Holding our breath, holding our muscles, holding our energy. Wrapping our being in ultra-tight saran wrap so nothing can get in, but nothing can get out. And, we’ve girded our loins as if to battle life rather than live it. This puts us in state of chronic stress that over time can lead to serious and chronic health issues.

So what can we do?

Los Angeles is known for high voltage earthquakes. It is also known for extra tall skyscrapers. But, when the earthquakes hit, the skyscrapers still stand. They are actually built on rollers, which allow the buildings to sway with the upheaval of the earth. It is this swaying that prevents the buildings from collapsing from the force of the earthquakes.

Life happens. Things come at us. It’s all in how we deal with it. Sway or brace? Rebalance or collapse?

I invite you share what you do for yourself to rebalance when life throws upheaval your way.

Peace and blessings,

Ellen
