Bradenton Man Sought In Felony Animal Cruelty Case
Bradenton Police say he neglected several dogs in his care and now has warrants out for his arrest.
BRADENTON, FL — The Bradenton Police Department is looking for help finding a man it says is wanted on two outstanding felony animal cruelty warrants.
According to the agency, Derris Sturdivant, 31, claimed ownership of nine dogs seized earlier this month by Manatee County Animal Services. The dogs were found in the backyard at 1106 3rd St. W. and were taken by authorities between April 12-13.
“One of the smaller dogs had injuries to his head, ear and tail and was tethered to a tree by a heavy chain,” an email from the police department said. “None of the dogs had food. Neither electricity nor running water is connected to the house where these dogs were caged.”

The county took the dogs to a secure facility and medical examinations were performed by a veterinarian, police noted. Two of the nine dogs “were suffering from injuries and neglect from not receiving care for these injuries and are now considered evidence,” the email said.
Sturdivant has not cooperated with the investigation, police said, but did claim ownership of the dogs.

The dogs are being held by animal services until they recover from their injuries, the police department said. Once they are cleared, they will be put up for adoption.
Anyone with information about Sturdivant’s whereabouts is asked to call the police department at 941-932-9300.
