Bradenton, FL (Dec. 23,2016) -- Healthcare professionals from Missouri to Florida have come to the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Bradenton campus to gain skills needed to take their leadership to the next level.
Nine students, including two current LECOM School of Dental Medicine faculty members, have enrolled in LECOM’s new online Masters in Health Services Administration (MHSA) program. More than 90 percent of the curriculum will be taught via distance education.
Before returning home to their computers for the rest of their distance-education classwork, students will spend a week in Bradenton for a week-long orientation. Classes begin Jan. 12.

Tim Novak, director of LECOM’s Masters in Health Services Administration program, said, “Students enter the MHSA program seeking the knowledge and skills required to become effective healthcare-business leaders. Our communities need these talented healthcare professionals to help solve the complex healthcare-industry challenges facing our nation today.”
LECOM’s MHSA program provides students with the knowledge and skills required to plan, direct, and coordinate medical and health services while working as administrators in hospitals or other healthcare facilities, public healthcare organizations, and private practice groups. The knowledge gained from the MHSA is essential for fiscal, planning and managerial work in healthcare organizations and the establishment and management of clinical practices.

Thomas Yoon, DDS, a LECOM periodontics faculty member and incoming class member, said, “When you’re in dental school or even in a residency, you don’t learn how to manage a business. And when you’re in a practice, well, it’s fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, learn by mistakes. What I hope to gain from this program is knowledge of the next level of management, as it applies to larger clinics, hospitals, even schools.”
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor and Statistics estimates that employment of health service administrators will grow by 22 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations, and receive a median annual pay of $84,270. The program offers degree completion in 18 months for working professionals (January cohort) and in 24 months (June cohort) for full-time students.
