Travel “Deep in the Heart of Texas” with SCF, Manatee-Sarasota’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble

The Symphonic Wind Ensemble at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) invites the public on a musical journey to the Lone Star state as it presents “Deep in the Heart of Texas” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at SCF’s Neel Performing Arts Center, 5840 26th St. W.

The concert will kick-off with John Philip Sousa’s rousing, yet widely unknown “The Daughters of Texas March.” Sousa dedicated one of his last compositions to the students of Texas Woman’s University for its premiere there in 1929. “Shenandoah” by Donald Grantham, professor of composition at the University of Texas at Austin also will be featured. SCF’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble was part of the consortium that
commissioned “Shenandoah” and is listed in the score.

Felicia Brunelle, violin instructor at SCF and concertmaster for the Sarasota Pops Orchestra, will take the stage as guest soloist for Arthur Gottschalk’s “Concerto for Violin and Wind Ensemble.”

Described by one reviewer as “a statement of grief following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy,” and based on Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem “Autumn,” the Symphonic Wind Ensemble also will present Warren Benson’s “The Leaves are Falling.” Benson taught at the Eastman School of Music in New York and Southern
Methodist University in Dallas, Texas before retiring to Bradenton.

The evening will conclude with Frank Ticheli’s “San Antonio Dances,” a two-movement piece that depicts sounds heard on the San Antonio Riverwalk.
