Disney World Says No to Selfie Sticks

The handy aids for taking quick shots are now banned on the theme park's rides.

Disney World visitors hoping to snap an incredible selfie as they barrel down the drops on Space Mountain might want to think twice.

The theme park has announced that selfie sticks are no longer welcome on its rides, according to the Orlando Business Journal. Selfie sticks are handheld poles that enable smartphones to be held at a distance to create better framing for self-portraits. Although handy, these devices pose a safety risk on rides, Disney officials say.

WDW News Today broke word of the selfie stick ban Monday, saying that all cast members have been instructed to advise guests to keep them stowed for the duration of rides. Those who break the rule will either be called out on an attraction’s PA system with a request to put them away or the ride will be stopped immediately, the website stated.

The new policy isn’t technically all that new, WDW News pointed out. After all, Disney has long maintained that it’s against park policy to have anything – including arms and legs – sticking out from rides.

Walt Disney World has not specifically added the selfie stick ban to its list of general rules posted online. It does however ban the use of “large tripods” and makes a point to note that “other items that we determine may be harmful or disruptive” are prohibited.

Selfie sticks may still be used outside of Disney rides and attractions.
