Photos: 21 Kilos of Cocaine Wash Up on Florida Beach
The unusual discovery was made Sunday morning.
While it’s not uncommon for all sorts of things to wash up on Florida beaches, it’s not everyday someone comes across $600,000 in cocaine ready for distribution.
But, that’s what the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office says happened in Destin on Sunday.
The agency reported that the county’s beach safety patrol made the find behind a condo complex around 11:30 a.m. The bales of cocaine, packaged neatly into bricks, added up to 21 kilos. Deputies estimated the street value at $600,000.

Making the find even more unusual, the sheriff’s office noted on its Facebook page, was the fact that the individual bricks were sealed in packages that had the “Adidas” athletic shoe logo on them.
While fish, seashells, an occasional shoe and a few messages in bottles are fairly common sightings along Florida shores, drug windfalls are rare, but not unheard of.

Last October, officials in Volusia County came across 20 kilos of cocaine on one beach and then found 20 pounds of marijuana the very next day on a different beach. Although finds of that nature are a score for law enforcement in that they don’t make it to the street, identifying the owners and arresting them can prove problematic, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s Gary Davidson said at the time.
“Normally, it’s impossible to trace,” Davidson told Patch.
Despite odds being stacked against catching the owner of the 21 kilos, Okaloosa officials are trying. They’re asking anyone with information about the haul to call them at 1-850-651-7400. Tips may also be submitted to Emerald Coast Crime Stoppers at 1-850-863-TIPS, emeraldcoastcrimestoppers.com, or by texting “Tip214 plus your message” to CRIMES (274637).
“Keep in mind people can get a reward of up to $3,000 from Crime Stoppers if they have info that could lead to an arrest,” the sheriff’s office noted on its Facebook page in response to a fan’s comment that the call out for information was humorous.
