A construction worker injured on the job in Clearwater Thursday morning found himself the focus of an unusual rescue.
With four difficult-to-access stories of building standing between them and the injured man, Clearwater Fire & Rescue crews had to devise a plan to help the man get out of the building safely. Undaunted, the department’s technical rescue squad came up with a plan to use a “giant construction crane” and a basket to carefully lift the man out of the building “and place him on the street where paramedics were waiting,” an email from the agency to media stated.

The unusual scene unfolded just after 10 a.m. Thursday when a call came in about the injured man at 100 N. Coronado Ave. It seems the man was working on the site of the Wyndham Grand resort when the incident occurred. The hotel is scheduled to open on Clearwater Beach in 2017.
It is unclear at this time how the man was injured or the extent of his injuries. The city say’s the man was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The man has been identified as Michael Stivers, 53, of Tierra Verde. He works for Clearwater Plumbing.
This is the second time in recent days firefighters have made headlines for unusual rescues. Tampa firefighters were also lauded for saving an unresponsive yellow Labrador on Davis Islands over the weekend.
