When a yellow Labrador retriever stopped breathing during a recent trip to Davis Islands Dog Beach, it didn’t take a bystander and Tampa firefighters long to jump in for the save.

The dramatic rescue was captured on video that was posted on YouTube on Sunday. The scene drew a small crowd of onlookers. At one point, a woman coaxes the dog to breathe, saying what sounds like “Come on Xena. Come on Xena.”

While Tampa police cannot confirm the dog’s or the owner’s name, they can confirm that it was Engine 13’s crew that came in for the save. Firefighters rushed in with oxygen to help the dog after being flagged down near the beach by witnesses.

The effort paid off.

“She’s sitting up,” someone said after the oxygen was delivered. “She’s sitting up.”

The beach rescue isn’t the only dramatic one involving first responders to have taken place in the Tampa Bay area as of late. Earlier this year, Tampa police rescued a dog that had been shot twice. Officers and residents also worked together to save a kitten that was trapped inside a storm drain along a dangerous downtown street.
