• Artist serves dual activities at Arts Alliance of Lemon Bay (yoursun.com) — Englewood's Arts Alliance of Lemon Bay is thriving thanks in large part to president and jewelry artist Nancy VanTassell, who helped secure a new lease and rally community support after a threatened closure. The Dearborn Street nonprofit now hosts classes most days, showcases work from more than 40 artists, and continues to weather challenges from hurricanes to red tide while expanding VanTassell's Florida-inspired creations.

• Splash: A natural investigator like no otter (yoursun.com) — An Englewood-based otter named Splash is gaining national recognition for helping Peace River K9 Search and Rescue investigate cold cases and search for human remains. Living with handler Michael Hadsell in Englewood, Splash is temporarily sidelined for retraining but will soon return to work, and he's being honored with a national "Animal of the Year" Purple Poppy award for his unique service.

• Firefighters Race Across Kettle Harbor to Fight Knight Island Blazes (englewoodreview.com) — Firefighters from Charlotte County and the Englewood Area Fire Control District barged trucks across Kettle Harbor on August 22 to battle a house fire on Knight Island, also known as Palm Island.
