1. Mayor Deegan, JTA shut down any possibility of using tolls to fix financial crisis (actionnewsjax.com) — Jacksonville leaders are firmly rejecting any return of bridge or road tolls as they confront the Jacksonville Transportation Authority's $39 million budget shortfall. Mayor Donna Deegan insists other solutions must fix the crisis, while JTA stresses tolls were only mentioned historically, not proposed, in the City Council's new financial oversight meeting.
2. Flooding disrupts Jacksonville's Springfield Boys & Girls Club, affecting 100 children (firstcoastnews.com) — Flooding at the Bridge Boys & Girls Club in Jacksonville's Springfield neighborhood has badly damaged ceilings, walls, and supplies, temporarily displacing about 100 children who rely on the site daily. Staff safely evacuated everyone, shut off power with JEA's help, and are now routing kids to other Northeast Florida club locations. Community donations are needed to repair the building and replace ruined resources.
3. Jacksonville man arrested after deadly shooting on Broward Road (news4jax.com) — A Jacksonville man has been arrested after a deadly shooting on Broward Road, leaving a man in his 40s dead at the scene. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office detectives say they worked overnight to identify Keith Carter Jr. as the suspect, and he's now jailed in Duval County on murder and firearm charges as the investigation continues.
4. Driver killed in two-vehicle crash at intersection of Edgewood Ave. and Cleveland Road (arcpublishing.com) — A driver has died after a two-vehicle crash at Edgewood Avenue West and Cleveland Road in Jacksonville, with another person suffering only minor injuries. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says both occupants of the Toyota Scion were rushed to a local hospital, where the driver later died, marking the 127th traffic fatality this year in Duval County.
5. Median U-turn planned for Touchton Road at Southside Boulevard (firstcoastnews.com) — Drivers on Jacksonville's Southside could soon see big changes at Southside Boulevard and Touchton Road, where FDOT plans a new median U‑turn and upgraded pedestrian crossings. The project, which also affects Hogan and Anders boulevards, aims to ease congestion and improve safety. Residents can weigh in at public meetings on October 28 and 29 before construction begins next fall.
