DCPS Superintendent Clarifies Flag, Banner Displays At School Events

The guidance comes following multiple occasions in which flags or banners addressed social causes or issues.

Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene has issued guidance to schools regarding displays of flags or banners at school events.

While students have the right, with certain limitations, to express themselves personally regarding social or political causes, their expression cannot occur in a manner that may be interpreted as a position of the school or the district.

The guidance comes following multiple occasions in which flags or banners used on the field in pre-game ceremonies at football games addressed social causes or issues.

Schools may display official flags of the United States, U.S. military and Coast Guard, and the state of Florida during the official program of the event. School spirit flags, banners and signage may also be displayed with approval of the school principal.
