Jacksonville: The 'Bold New City Of The South' With Nature And Culture

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Jacksonville so special.

Jacksonville is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Jacksonville has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • Jacksonville is home to one of the largest urban park system in the United States, covering more than 80,000 acres throughout the city. Visitors and locals can explore scenic trails, pristine beaches and historic landmarks within the park system, including the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, Kingsley Plantation and the Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens.
  • Did you know that Jacksonville is also known as the "Bold New City of the South?" The city has a rich history dating back to the 16th century, with numerous museums and cultural institutions that highlight its past. For example, the MOSH: Museum of Science & History features interactive exhibits and planetarium shows, while the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens showcases art and horticulture from around the world.
  • Jacksonville has a thriving food and drink scene, with many locally-owned restaurants and bars offering unique cuisine and craft cocktails. From seafood and BBQ to fusion and farm-to-table, there's something for everyone. Check out the Riverside Arts Market on Saturdays to sample local food, listen to live music and browse artisanal goods.
  • Sports fans will love Jacksonville's passion for football. The city hosts the annual Florida-Georgia game, one of college football's biggest rivalries, at TIAA Bank Field. The Jacksonville Jaguars also play here and the stadium offers tours throughout the year.
  • Jacksonville is home to several theaters, including the historic Florida Theatre and the Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts. There are also many galleries and public art installations throughout the city, such as the Jaxson's Night Market, which showcases local artists and vendors.

  • Did you know that Jacksonville is the birthplace of the Southern rock genre? Legendary bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band got their start in Jacksonville and visitors can still enjoy live music at venues like the Florida Theatre and the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.
  • Jacksonville is a great place to get outdoors and enjoy the beach. With over 22 miles of beautiful beaches, visitors can swim, surf, or just relax on the sand and the Jacksonville Beach Pier is a popular spot for fishing.
  • The city is rich in African American history, with landmarks like the Eartha M.M. White Historical Museum and the James Weldon Johnson Park. Take a walking tour of the Black Heritage Trail to learn more about the contributions of Black Americans to the city's history.
