“This is an exciting milestone in the creation of what will ultimately be a comprehensive stroke program in our community,” said Ascension St. Vincent’s neurosurgeon Dr. Mayshan Ghiassi, who leads the Riverside stroke team. “Time is critical when someone has a stroke and our ultimate goal is to ensure people get the care they need, when and where they need it.”
Ascension St. Vincent’s has also recently hired 12 clinicians specific to stroke care, including three physicians and nine advanced practice providers.
“Our new hybrid operating room is an important step to increasing access to an advanced level of stroke care within our community, especially for residents in and around Ascension St. Vincent’s Riverside,” said hospital president Jon Cooper. “We look forward to continuing to grow this important program for many years to come.”
The health system plans to create additional stroke-related clinical positions and is converting a riverfront nursing unit into a neurology-specific intensive care unit to provide improved continuity of care.
According to a report from the American Heart Association, the country’s highest death rates from stroke are in the Southeast. It is also a leading cause of serious long-term disability and reduces mobility in more than half of stroke survivors age 65 and over.
