Local girl is trying to save a tree in Brazil from extinction

The Araucaria angustifolia is very much connected to the Brazilian culture but due to excessive use as timber, it is in danger of extinction

The covered area today of native Araucaria angustifolia in the Southern Region of Brazil is about 2% of its original coverage. Years of intense logging has put the Araucaria angustifolia in danger of extinction. This is a tree that provides the “pinhão” or pine tree seed that is a food delicacy very much appreciated in that region. The Araucaria angustifolia is so much connected to the local culture and tradition that it is featured even in the Parana State flag of that country. Such important symbol needs to be preserved and Nicole Haragutchi (10 years old from Saint Augustine, FL), together with Manu Kanegoski (11 years old from Cascavel, PR in Brazil), a student with special needs, are working together to preserve it. They joined forces with IDEAS for Us and the Ambassadors from Nicole’s If You Can Dream Foundation, Meire and Dorival Vicente, and the Cascavel city Environment Secretary in Brazil, to create Araucaria angostifolia planting events in different locations around Cascavel City, PR such as:

  • Cascavel Vitoria Park on October 6, 2022
    • Rua 7 de Setembro, 4249, CEP 85811-100, Cascavel, PR
    • Coordinates of the tree: -24.940252, -53.458095
  • Cascavel Tarquinio Park on October 16, 2022
    • Rua Wenceslau Braz, 1056, CEP 85803-650, Cascavel, PR
    • Coordinates of the tree: -24.972679, -53.462273
  • Cascavel Municipal Lake on November 16, 2022
    • Avenida Rocha Pombo, 3000, Região do Lago 3, Cascavel, PR
    • Coordinates of the tree: -24.965248, -53.433595

Negotiations are underway for the planting of the Araucaria angustifolia at the Iguassu Falls Park and at the Guarani Indian Reservation.
