'In Dog We Trust' Rug Up For Auction

Proceeds from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office's sale will benefit a local animal rescue.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office isn’t going to the dogs, but proceeds from the sale of its unusual lobby rug are.

The sheriff’s office made national headlines Wednesday when it was discovered a rug in its lobby bore the phrase “In Dog We Trust” instead of “In God We Trust.” It seems the rug was placed down around the time the new $81 million headquarters in Largo opened a few months back. No one noticed the chuckle-inducing typo until Wednesday when an observant deputy spotted it while passing by.

The rug has since been rolled up and removed from the lobby, but its story isn’t over yet.

“We will not sweep anything under the rug,” the sheriff’s office announced following the typo’s discovery. “Due to extensive interest regarding our plans for the ‘doggone’ rug,” it’s been decided to auction off the piece.

All of the proceeds from the auction will go to Canine Estates Inc., a local animal rescue. The auction is already live on www.onlineauction.com.

As of Thursday night, the bidding was at $100. The rug in question is dark green and has the sheriff’s office’s star logo in the center. The transposed wording appears in the center of the star.
