Scot, A 12-Foot, 1,644-Pound Great White Shark, Was Tracked Off Florida Keys: OCEARCH

Scot, a 12-foot, 1,644-pound great white shark, pinged just west of Florida Keys during spring break, OCEARCH data shows.

FLORIDA KEYS — Scot, a more than 12-foot-long great white shark, was tracked near the Florida Keys during spring break.

The 1,644-pound shark’s tracker pinged just west of the string of islands Tuesday afternoon, OCEARCH data shows.

OCEARCH is a research group that tags sharks and other sea life with electronic trackers and releases them back into the wild. They follow the animals’ movements throughout North America.

“We met this mature, male shark in Nova Scotia in September 2021 and have been able to track him for over 10,000 miles since,” the organization wrote in a Facebook post. (Watch a video of Scot being tagged and released below.)

Scot, initially found Sept. 8, 2021, off West Ironbound Island in Canada, was the 74th great white shark tagged, sampled and released by the agency in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

He was named by the organization’s partners at SeaWorld after the people of Nova Scotia, “who have always been so welcoming and committed to the science and health of our oceans,” according to the OCEARCH website.

Several other great white sharks have been tracked off the Gulf Coast of Florida in recent months.

Sable, a 10-foot, 6-inch-long shark weighing 807 pounds, was last tracked near the Panhandle on Jan. 27, the agency said.

Keji, a 9-foot, 7-inch long shark weighing 578 pounds, was tracked in the waters off Sarasota on Feb. 28, according to OCEARCH.

Maple, a an 11-foot, 7-inch shark weighing 1,264 pounds, last pinged in waters off the Panhandle on March 17, data shows.

A Florida boat captain also spotted a great white shark about 30 miles off the coast of Sarasota in early March.

Data shows that several great white sharks were also tracked off Florida’s Atlantic Coast recently.

Hali, a 10-foot shark weighing 697 pounds, was tracked March 15 near Jacksonville, according to OCEARCH.

Meanwhile, Ironbound, a 12-foot, four-inch shark weighing 1,189 pounds, last pinged near Boca Raton, the tracker shows.
