Albizu University Offers Free Mental Health Support Following Earthquakes in Colombia

Albizu University in Miami is offering free mental health support through the Albizu Clinic to individuals experiencing emotional distress, grief, anxiety or uncertainty following the recent earthquakes in Colombia. Mental health professionals and supervised doctoral trainee clinicians are available to provide brief post-disaster psychological interventions, emotional support, coping strategies and referrals for continued mental health care.

The initiative is intended to provide immediate support to individuals and families who may be struggling with the emotional impact of the disaster, whether they were directly affected or are coping with concern for loved ones.

“Albizu University recognizes the profound emotional impact that a disaster can have on individuals, families and communities,” said Dr. Andel V. Nicasio, Clinic Director of the Albizu Clinic. “Our faculty and supervised doctoral trainee clinicians are prepared to offer a safe and supportive space where individuals can process what they are experiencing, learn healthy coping strategies and connect with additional resources when needed.”

The university has previously mobilized its mental health resources in response to disasters affecting communities with close ties to South Florida. Following the earthquakes in Venezuela, Albizu University also made free psychological support available through the Albizu Clinic, providing members of the community with access to emotional support and post-disaster coping resources.

According to Pew Research Center and U.S. Census Bureau data, Florida hosts the largest concentration of the Colombian-origin population in the United States, accounting for roughly 31% to 34% of the national total, with state estimates ranging between approximately 443,000 and over 473,000 residents. An estimated 240,000 to 250,000 residents of Colombian origin live across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
