Back to school, back to saving the day! <a href="https://voicesbroward.org/" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Voices for Children of Broward County</a>&nbsp;(Voices) hosted its annual Back-to-School Extravaganza&nbsp;at Old Navy in Oakwood Plaza in Hollywood on Sunday, Aug. 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Back-to-School Extravaganza is a part of Voices&rsquo; year-long 15th anniversary celebration and expands its mission to ensure that every child and young adult in Broward County who has experienced abuse, neglect, or abandonment has access to essential resources and programs that promote long-term stability and well-being.&nbsp;&nbsp;Over 70&nbsp;children in foster care had the opportunity to shop for their back-to-school essentials&nbsp;alongside real-life superheroes, including Voices volunteers, Hollywood Police Department,&nbsp;City of Hollywood Fire Rescue &amp; Beach Safety,&nbsp;Broward County Sheriff&rsquo;s Office and beloved character entertainers Spider-Man, Disney Encanto&rsquo;s Mirabel and K-pop stars Rumi and Mira.&nbsp;&nbsp;Families enjoyed a fun-filled&nbsp;morning, including breakfast, face painting, activities, and a surprise appearance by Florida Panthers&nbsp;Stanley C. Panther. DJ Aaron provided the soundtrack for the morning.&nbsp;Each child received brand-new clothes, a backpack full of first-day essentials and the reminder that their community sees them as the heroes they truly are.&nbsp;&ldquo;The start of a new school year should feel exciting, not overwhelming, but for many children, showing up without the right supplies, clothing, or resources can make that first day feel out of reach,&rdquo; said Voices President and CEO Erica Herman. &ldquo;A backpack stocked with school supplies represents so much more than pencils and notebooks. Behind each plate is rescued food, compassion, community support, and collective action working together to nourish neighbors facing food insecurity across South Florida.
Bid to beat hunger! An <a href="http://www.feedingsouthflorida.org/auction" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">online auction</a> during the month will allow bidders access to fun, unique items while supporting Feeding South Florida&rsquo;s hunger relief efforts. &ldquo;Hunger Heroes&rdquo; t-shirts will be available for purchase to raise awareness about hunger. Monetary donations will go further during September with a <a href="http://feedingsouthflorida.org/hungeractionmatch" rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">Hunger Action Match</a>, all month long donations will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000, by Presenting Sponsor Delta Airlines. Every donation is critical, as a $1 donation allows Feeding South Florida to provide approximately four meals to a family in need.

Now, more than six years later, Valverde and her network of fosters, volunteers and friends remain committed to saving injured and special needs animals minutes from euthanasia at local shelters or found the streets of Miami. &ldquo;We rescue some of the region&rsquo;s most vulnerable animals here in South Florida. Unfortunately if a dog comes into a local shelter injured and in need of medical care, they are euthanized because the county doesn&rsquo;t have the resources or medical care available in the shelter. This is where we come in. We pull injured dogs or cats and get them the medical care they need. From dogs hit by cars with broken femurs to special needs dogs and hospice cancer dogs, we have rescued over 300 animals so far and provided them the care and love they need to enjoy their last days on earth. The funds from this contest will go directly to helping us pay for medical vet visits, dog food and other necessary supplies needed to rehabilitate and foster our rescue dogs,&rdquo; Valverde stated.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to the latest report from the Best Friends Animal Society, over 378,000 dogs and cats are euthanized in U.S. shelters every year with Florida ranking among the top five states with the highest number of dogs and cats euthanized in shelters. This represents 54% of all euthanized animals. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s our mission to rescue animals from being killed in shelters who otherwise can live normal lives if provided the proper medical treatment and love from a human. We want to get this shelter euthanasia number down and ensure that animals do not leave this earth without experiencing love, safety and compassion,&rdquo; Valverde said.&nbsp;

LOUD and art education champion, Councilwoman Julien, are also launching a new student art internship program for students in grades 9-12 interested in learning more about fashion, art, culture, music, and event management.&nbsp;

The new intern program just kicked off this month in collaboration with Miami-Dade County&rsquo;s Summer Youth Internship Program, with a full team of high school students interested in working on creative artistic projects. &ldquo;Investing in art education and internships is essential for our bright creative youth here in Miami Gardens and beyond. This program is a great way to be a part of South Florida&rsquo;s most innovative and inspiring cultural art and fashion events of the year,&rdquo; said Councilwoman Linda Julien.&nbsp;

Now in its sixth year, LOUD Week has become one of Miami&rsquo;s most talked-about urban art and fashion festivals merging artistry, equity, fashion, and cultural innovation into an immersive four-day celebration that amplifies diverse voices and transforms Miami Gardens into the epicenter of urban creativity. &ldquo;LOUD Week&trade; is a movement in which the boldness of our culture meets the brilliance of creative expression. Located at 2032 Harrison St., Hollywood, FL 33020, in the heart of Downtown Hollywood, Common Room was designed to serve as a neighborhood anchor. Common Room&rsquo;s philosophy centers on reliably delicious food and expertly crafted cocktails in a warm and energetic atmosphere. The Common Room team prides itself on hospitality, where guests become regulars. 
Discreetly tucked within the restaurant is The Brooklyn Room, a curated speakeasy accessible by invitation only, which is planned to open at the beginning of August. Its approachable dining experience, layered with a post-dinner experiential cocktail component, offers guests two distinct experiences under one roof.
Co-founder Eric Douglas coordinated a team of South Florida-based companies to assist him in this project. Jewel Toned Interiors designed the interiors, and the architecture and construction were led by Kaller Architects and Lombardi Development. The intimate 2000 square-foot restaurant offers seating for approximately 65 guests in the dining room, with future outdoor seating planned. 

Executive Chef Tanya Evans brings a culinary vision built on simplicity: delicious and familiar, executed with fresh ingredients. Evans comes to Common Room with experience at Barton G, Major Food Group and Caf&eacute; Minstral, a background that spans high-volume hospitality and detail-driven kitchens. Ingredients are sourced fresh from premium suppliers, with quality as the consistent standard across every dish.
