Watch: Hurricane Irma's Destructive Journey By The Numbers
"As we complete restoration on critical infrastructure facilities and primary power lines, we're moving more and more of our teams into neighborhoods to repair power lines and local transformers in order to bring light back to every community we serve," said Eric Silagy, president and CEO of FPL. "This means going street by street, house by house."

Just prior to the storm making landfall in the Florida Keys on Sunday the total stood at only 193,000. As of Monday, some 2.4 million South Florida customers were without power. The following types of facilities have had their power restored:
- 112 major hospitals – 100 percent restored
- 44 emergency operations centers – 100 percent restored
- 54 air transportation facilities – 100 percent restored
- 31 seaports and related infrastructure – 100 percent restored
- 21 correctional facilities – 100 percent restored
- 55 active military installations – 100 percent restored
- 22 licensed nursing homes – 100 percent restored
- 12 licensed assisted living facilities – 100 percent restored
- 4 hospice facilities – 100 percent restored
In addition, some 93 percent of 400 nursing homes classified as priority critical infrastructure facilities were impacted by Irma. Nearly 2,000 impacted schools classified as priority critical infrastructure facilities have also been fully restored as have more than 1,400 impacted gas stations.
FPL said that the restoration effort now includes 21,500 people. All 263 substations that were affected by Hurricane Irma across the state are back on line.
Of the total outages, most were in Miami-Dade County followed by Broward and Palm Beach County, according to the Patch analysis.
FPL said that service was restored to more than 2.7 million customers in the first 48 hours since Hurricane Irma cleared the company's service area with thousands more customers added every hour.
"Compared with Hurricane Wilma, restoration is progressing roughly four times as quickly," officials said. "For FPL customers in counties on the eastern side of the state, restoration is projected to be complete by end of day, Sept. 17."
In Southwest Florida, where the damage is most extensive, restoration is more challenging, officials said. The project is expected to take until Sept. 22.
"Exceptions to these estimates could occur in areas impacted by tornadoes, severe flooding and other extreme conditions," FPL said. "Customers should continue to heed safety precautions."
