Here are the top five stories in Miami today:

1. The police union representing Christopher Krickovich, the former Broward Sheriff's Office deputy acquitted last week on battery charges for the rough arrest of Delucca Rolle outside of a McDonald's in Tamarac, is demanding that he be rehired and put back on the police force. (WSVN)

2. City of Pembroke Pines Fire Chief John Picarello retired on Monday, August 1 after 37 years of service. He served 16 years as fire chief. His successor will be Marcelino Rodriguez, who has 21 years of experience with the department. (WPLG Local 10)

3. Miami Dade College's (MDC) acclaimed Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex (MAGIC) is launching an eSports team for eligible students. MDC eSports is actively recruiting players with tryouts beginning on Friday, August 12. The MDC team will participate in VALORANT, a competitive, team-based competition. (Miami's Community News)

4. Miami Commissioner Joe Carollo responded to critics of a controversial plan by city of Miami to build between 50 and 1,000 tiny homes to relocate city's homeless population to Virginia Key island. "These are the inhumane people. They want them thrown in the streets because they don't want them in their neighborhoods," Carollo said. (WPLG Local 10)

5. Fox's Sherron Inn in South Miami, a historic dive bar and restaurant which first opened its doors in 1947, reopened after seven years on Friday, July 29. It is fully restored with a major focus on preserving its interior history. Menu items are staying true to its roots and include prime rib, fried chicken, a clam sandwich and French onion soup.   • Vice President Kamala Harris visited Miami on Monday to promote new federal funding of $1 billion dollars to help states protect against the impacts of climate change. "The climate crisis is here," Harris said at FIU. (Subscription: Miami Herald, Free: NBC Miami)
  • Cuban migrants are in custody after making it to shore. Officials said 17 people made their way to Big Pine Key from Cuba. No injuries were reported. (WSVN)
  • Miami-Dade County Commission on July 19 voted to approve Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's proposal to cut the countywide, UMSA, library, and fire millage rates by one percent. It is the first property tax cut in a decade. (Miami's Community News)
  • The Florida Board of Medicine is slated Friday, August 5, in Fort Lauderdale to consider a proposal by Gov. Ron DeSantis' administration to ban physicians from providing treatments such as hormone therapy and puberty-blocking medication to transgender youths. The move is being protested by LGBTQ groups throughout the state. (WLRN)
