Bank Robbery Suspect Caught Counting Cash, Deputies Say
The man was reportedly walking down a street adding up his take when a deputy spotted him.

PORT RICHEY, FL — Robbing a bank isn’t a good idea. Walking down a public street, counting the stolen cash after committing the crime isn’t either.
A Port Richey man reportedly found that out for himself Wednesday afternoon. According to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, a man walked into Bank of America, 8338 Embassy Blvd., around 1:43 p.m. to open an account. The man provided his Florida’s driver’s license to the teller, but was told he needed to have a minimum of $25 to open the account.
Coming up short on funds, the man left the bank without achieving his goal, the agency wrote in an email to media.

Deputies say the man returned about an hour later. He wasn’t there to open an account the second time around, the email noted, instead he demanded cash from the teller.

The teller complied with his request, handing over an undisclosed amount of cash. The man then left the bank again and law enforcement was notified about the robbery.
As it turned out, a deputy responding to the call happened to spot a man matching the description of the suspect “walking down the street counting money,” the sheriff’s office said. When the deputy stopped the man, it also turned out he had that same amount of cash on him that the teller gave to the robber.
Steve Leon Coley Jr., 36, was booked into the Land O’ Lakes jail on a robbery charge Wednesday afternoon. He remained there Thursday morning.
