GEEKNOTE: Super Saturday

GEEKNOTE: No computer horror stories this week. I want to take a few minutes today to describe what I believe is going to be an absolutely fabulous Saturday coming up this weekend.

New Port Richey is going to be hosting not one, but TWO separate events on Saturday, August 11th. You really ought to plan to come out and enjoy them both.

First off will be the Morton Plant North Bay Coteeman Triathlon, which will start off at 7:30 a.m. at the New Port Richey Recreation and Aquatic Center.  The Coteeman is in its fifth year and caters to folks new to the sport with a pool swim, a nine-mile bike ride, and a 3.1-mile run. We are again expecting over 150 athletes from as far away as Tallahassee, the Bahamas and even Ohio coming to participate in our race.

The bike course goes up Van Buren to Massachusetts Avenue to Congress, down to Louisana, then Grand and back up to Massachsetts Avenue.  I'm biased, but I'd pick a spot near Sims Park or on the River Park along Grand as the best places to watch the bikes. They make two loops, so you can see everybody go by twice.  The bike course map is at: http://www.coteeman.com/bike_map.pdf

The run course comes downtown, and my pick for the best place to see it would be the old Baptist Church parking lot at Central and Adams. The run course map is at: http://www.coteeman.com/run_map.pdf

Of course, if you want to see the whole thing, park at Sweetbay (Congress & Mass) and walk over to the Rec. Center. You'll see the swim, the transition area, and the finish line.

We need folks to come out and cheer on the athletes. With athletes ranging from pre-teens to retirees (We had a 4 year old last year), they will appreciate all the cheering and encouragement you can give them.  Of course, if you want to try to complete a triathlon yourself, you don't have to train for years and then go all the way to London, just visit http://www.coteeman.com and click on the registration link.

Saturday night, the widely acclaimed "Night In The Tropics" will return to downtown New Port Richey.  With live music, a car show and lots more, what's not to like?  The fun will kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday night. This year marks the first year that the event organizers will be depending on our local bars and restaurants to keep everyone supplied with their favorite beverages.

As the race director for the Coteeman, I'll be up at 0 dark 30 to make sure the race comes off successfully.  I'll no doubt go home and take a nap so I'll be ready to check out all the cool cars and music at Night In The Tropics Saturday evening.  I wouldn't miss either of these events and I encourage you to check them out as well.
