Why Should I Maintenance or Service my Air Conditioning System?

A lot of air conditioning repairs can be avoided with simple maintenance. You
would be amazed at the amount of service calls we receive as the seasons change and people start running their air and heat more often. Some of these repair calls wouldn’t be necessary if the system has had its regular maintenance in the spring or fall. There are a few things you can do yourself to help maintain your system and some things that can simply be handled by calling your AC contractor to have them come out and service your system.

Changing your air filters on a regular basis is a top priority when it comes to
prolonging the lifespan of your system and keeping down on undue stress to the
air conditioners components. Air filters help keep dirt and debris out of your
systems internal working parts, but if they are not changed regularly, they can
cause poor air flow which leads to poor energy efficiency. A clogged air filter
can be just as bad as running your system with no air filter, letting excess
dirt and debris that it can’t catch back into your system.

A few things your AC contractor should do on a maintenance is clean your drain
line, clean your condenser coils, check your refrigerant charge, inspect your
evaporator  coil, check electrical connections, check motors, and lubricate all moving parts if needed.

Clean your drain line – Clearing the drain line helps to be sure that there isn’t an
obstruction in the drain line before the heavy cooling season. This helps to be
sure that your drain line won’t back up and cause water leaks or system shut
downs

Clean your coils – Coils in your air conditioning system should be cleaned and
checked regularly. Outside coils can get clogged with leaves and dirt from the
environment around them causing the system air flow to decrease and the system
components to break down at a faster rate. The evaporator coil remains cleaner
with proper filter changes but can get clogged over time with normal use
causing poor air flow and possible refrigerant leaks.

Check electrical connections – Some break downs can be caused by something as simple as an electrical component going bad. These usually show signs when tested and can be replaced when they get weak. If they are replaced at maintenance, this could save you the cost of a special trip to replace the part, as well as the inconvenience of having a break down on a hot summer day.

Motors – Motors like electrical connections can wear down over time and can be tested by a service professional for voltage to be sure that they aren’t going bad
that might leave you in another break down in the middle of the summer heat.

Lubricate moving parts and check general condition of system – Some systems require a motor to be oiled or a part to be adjusted, these things keep your system up and running and can often prolong the life of your system by simply being adjusted before they become a problem.

just like with your car, good care can often lead to a longer life, less break
