Child Playing With Matches Sparks Weeki Wachee House Fire: Officials
Four people and three pets were displaced after a house fire was started by a child playing with matches, Hernando County Fire Rescue said.
WEEKI WACHEE, FL — A Weeki Wachee family was displaced, including four people and three pets, after a house fire was started Saturday morning by a child playing with matches, Hernando County Fire Rescue wrote in a social media post.
Firefighters who responded to the fire in the 7400 block of Madrid Road just before 9 a.m. found smoke coming from a window on the side of the home.
Crews aggressively attacked the fire, found in a bedroom, to quickly extinguish it, HCFR officials said.

No injuries were reported in the blaze.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family.

“HCFR reminds the community to keep matches, lighters and other fire-starting devices out of the reach of children and educate them on the safe use of fire-starting devices. Also, ensure working smoke detectors are installed in your home,” the agency said.
