Deputy Suspended After Posting Ferguson Comments on Facebook

He and several other deputies from Florida's Wakulla County are facing heat for sharing their opinions on the social media site.

A deputy from the Panhandle’s Wakulla County has been suspended with pay after making a post on Facebook following a grand jury decision not to indict Ferguson, Mo., police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of an unarmed teen back in August.

Walkulla Det. Richard Moon wrote, β€œDamn cockroaches! Squashem all !!!! I say we rally for Wilson, who’s with me?”

Moon isn’t the only deputy in hot water with Sheriff Charlie Creel for making insensitive posts either, the Tallahassee Democrat reported. Several other deputies, including Under Sheriff Trey Morrison, also made posts that caught the sheriff’s attention, the paper reported.

β€œExpressing an opinion about something on social media is certainly the right of the individual when they are off duty,” Creel said in a statement. β€œBut in no way do these views expressed in the posts reflect the opinion of the sheriff’s office or the members of this agency.”

The posts appeared on Facebook in the hours following the Ferguson grand jury decision. That case revolves around the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.

Brown was a suspect in a store robbery. He was unarmed when the shooting occurred.

The jury’s decision not to indict Wilson has sparked rioting in the Missouri community. A number of protests have been staged in communities across the country, as well. Protesters took to the streets in both Tampa and St. Petersburg Tuesday to express their displeasure about the decision not to indict.

At this point, Moon is the only officer who faces suspension. The others, the Democrat reported, are being talked to.
