Ground Depression Concerns Linger in Pasco

The county has announced it is suspending utility work in Holiday through the weekend.

As geotechnical experts continue to delve into the whys behind the number of recent depressions that have opened up in the Holiday area, Pasco County has announced its utility project in the area most affected is on hold until after Thanksgiving weekend at the earliest.

The announced halt involves the sewage pump station project on Bartelt Road. That project is close to the depressions that opened up along Torch Street earlier this month.

A total of four possible sinkholes have opened in the Holiday area in recent weeks.

Residents who live along Torch Street are also receiving a letter from the county explaining the county’s stand on the issue.

The letter is meant to assure “residents that our project will not resume until our geo-tech
consultants have told us how to best proceed with the project,” county spokesman Doug Tobin wrote in an email to media. Residents with questions about the utility project are asked to call 727-847-8040 during normal business hours.

The Torch Street depressions in particular led to a number of evacuations. When residents can return home, Tobin wrote, is a “matter between the homeowner, private insurance carrier and insurance carrier of the Holiday RV and Trailer Park.”

The county’s emergency management office urges affected residents to stay in close contact with their insurance carriers and trailer park management.

The county is also offering help to residents who may need assistance with temporary housing due to displacement by the ground depressions. Those in need should call the emergency management office at 727-847-8137.
