Rumors Of School Violence Continue To Circulate At Pasco Schools

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco is urging parents to remind their children not to spread rumors of school violence on social media.

PORT RICHEY, FL – Concerned that social media is fanning unsubstantiated threats of violence at Pasco County schools, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco is urging parents to remind their children not to spread these rumors on social media.

Nocco’s request comes on the heels of two rumors involving Pasco County schools.

On Monday morning, Feb. 20, deputies investigated a rumor of a possible school shooting at Chasco Elementary in Port Richey. Students were sharing the unfounded rumor on social media.

The sheriff’s office also investigated rumors spread by students through social media of threats of violence at Fivay High School in Hudson.

β€œWe are aware of Fivay High School students discussing rumors of violence through social media,” Nocco said. β€œOvernight, several Pasco Sheriff's Office units conducted an investigation and found that the rumors started from a news report about other threats across the country and is not related at all to Fivay High School or any other Pasco County schools”.

Deputies have been stationed at Chasco Elementary School to provide a sense of security.

Nocco is asking students to tell a responsible adult if they hear or see anything related to possible school violence rather than post information about threats on Facebook, Twitter and other social media venues.
