Body Of Missing Child Found After Boat Capsized On Orlando Lake

The child was one of five members of a rowing team that was practicing when their boat capsized.

ORLANDO, FL — Authorities recovered the body of a child who was missing after a rowing club’s boat capsized on an Orlando lake when lightning struck the area where they were practicing, according to an Orlando Fire Department spokesperson.

The incident occurred just before 6 p.m. Thursday on Lake Fairview. Three children were returned to their parents and one was taken to the hospital for treatment, authorities said.

Officials did not identify the missing child, whose body was found around 5:15 p.m. Friday.

"We are incredibly saddened by this incident and appreciate the efforts of the multiple agencies who worked together over the past 24 hours to assist in the rescue," an Orlando Fire Department spokesperson said in a statement.

Authorities from multiple agencies were using sonar and concentrating on the area where the boat capsized as they carried out the search.
