Fireworks Mistaken For Gunfire At Orlando July 4 Event; 12 Injured

Authorities found no evidence of shots fired during a Lake Eola event; 12 people were hurt as firecrackers were mistaken for gunshots.

ORLANDO, FL — Twelve people were injured Monday when a crowd of people gathered for a Fourth of July event at Lake Eola panicked after mistaking fireworks for gunfire, according to police and other reports.

Video from the event shows people fleeing after the fireworks began at 9:45 p.m., WKMG in Orlando reported.

Orlando police confirmed the incident on Twitter. According to WKMG, authorities said the commotion was likely caused by firecrackers that were thrown into the crowd and mistaken for gunshots.

"This whole (area) was filled with people just trampling down everybody. We got trampled down. We got pinned down onto the ground," a woman told WKMG.

Authorities found no evidence of a shooting or shots fired during the Lake Eola event, police said. No one was seriously injured, according to authorities.

The confusion in Orlando came just hours after a mass shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois. The Highland Park shooting killed six people and injured dozens of others.

Robert "Bobby" Crimo III, 22, was later arrested by police in connection with the shooting.

A similar event happened at a municipal Fourth of July celebration in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Firecrackers were set off during a fight between a group of juveniles, prompting the crowd to flee.

Police also found no evidence of a shooting in Harrisburg, ABC 27 reported.
