ORLANDO, FL — An 18-year-old high school quarterback was killed last weekend when he was hit by a car while helping a motorist stranded on the side of the road, according to reports and the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 18-year-old's truck was hit by a car early Sunday morning on Dallas Boulevard, just south of Oberly Parkway, authorities said in a news release. The victim was identified by multiple news outlets as East River High School student Nick Miner.

According to police, Miner was trying to pull another truck onto the road after it became stuck on the east shoulder.

According to authorities, Miner was hit by a woman driving a Honda Insight. The impact of the crash caused Miner's truck to overturn. He was ejected from the truck and sustained fatal injuries, police said.

Two females, ages 17 and 20, were hit by Miner's truck during the collision, police said. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

East River High School officials confirmed Miner's death in multiple Twitter posts.

In a post shared Sunday, Principal Becky Watson said grief counselors would be available to students and staff.

"A wide range of emotions can be felt during the grief process and we encourage you to openly discuss your son or daughter's reaction to this news," Watson said.

Miner's parents told Fox 35 in Orlando that Miner was helping a friend when he was killed. Miner was a straight-A student, the football team's starting quarterback and just bought a suit for homecoming on Thursday. He was also on the homecoming court.

"He had such high hopes. He was planning to graduate, go to college and play and now that’s all stolen from us. Because of someone’s carelessness," Nick's mom, Deanna Miner, told Fox 35.

A GoFundMe was set up by Miner's brother, Andrew, to help the family with funeral costs.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. So far, no charges have been filed.
