Local mom on a mission chairs 5K to raise awareness for NF
Local participation will raise funds for this genetic condition of the nervous system that causes tumors to form on and inside the body.
Melanie Leach’s life took an unexpected turn when her son Zac was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis. Like many parents who receive the diagnosis for the first time, Melanie sought out answers for this disorder, which brought a lot of uncertainties. Through her research, Melanie found the medical care she needed for Zac and discovered a supportive network through the NF Network.
Armed with answers, Melanie wanted to take her involvement further. Realizing her family couldn’t be the only NF family in Florida, Melanie began the #NFStrong 5K for Neurofibromatosis in the heart of Orlando. Over the last decade, the walk has grown to reach new families and communities and led to new community and educational events across Florida.
As the community grew, Melanie’s determination also grew to join the NF Network Advocacy Program, representing the state of Florida and sharing her story with congressional offices, advocating for federal funding for NF research. Her work has resulted in dozens of signatures of support from Florida representatives year after year.

Melanie continues to inspire the NF community in the ways she continues to grow, serve, and support not only the local and national NF community, but most importantly her incredible family. Despite the challenges and obstacles that they have faced, Melanie has overcome these challenges with grace. Melanie is a mom on a mission for a cure and better treatments for Zac and her NF friends and families.
Join Melanie, September 15, 2024, for the 10th Annual #NFStrong 5K to support the battle against NF, one of the most common rare genetic disorders that impacts over 120,000 Americans. This event, hosted by NF Network, aims to raise funds for research and spread awareness of Neurofibromatosis through a 5k Walk/Fun Run at the beautiful Boardman Park.

In addition to the energizing walk and fun run, there will be exciting raffles, facepainting and refreshments available for all participants. The event kicks off with check-in and walk-up registration at 9:00 am, followed by the Family Walk and 5K Fun Run at 10:00 am.
