Ocean Breeze Elementary helping homeless dogs & cats

Ocean Breeze Elementary School is holding a community outreach event to help improve the shelter experience for homeless animals.

Ocean Breeze Elementary School in Indian Harbour Beach is holding a “Be Their Valentine” community outreach event for the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Care Center. Students are encouraged to bring in old bedding/towels, pet toys, food and other general animal items which will be used to improve the shelter experience for homeless animals in BCSO’s care.

“The staff and the animals at the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Animal Care Center are excited to have the support of Ocean Breeze Elementary School and their involvement with helping the animals in our care is so appreciated,” says Emily Gilbert, Special Events & Volunteer Coordinator for BCSO.

Ocean Breeze families are donating everything from peanut butter (excellent for frozen kongs) to old towels (great for bedding) to white rice (for upset canine tummies).

As Ocean Breeze parent Kim DelTorchio says, “It’s easy to donate old sheets and toys to make kennels more enjoyable for animals. It’s also a great learning tool for kindness.”

Additionally, Mr. John Alison, Ocean Breeze’s art teacher, will be having some of his older students making kennel signs to help adoption chances, such as, “Go Slow, I’m Scared” or “I Bark in the Kennel, Not Out”. Lowe’s of Indian Harbour Beach provided the wood and Whale Eye Woodworks created signs from it.

“Ocean Breeze is excited to get our students and families involved with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office animal shelter. It's a great way to instill community service while helping to improve the shelter experience for homeless animals,” says Ocean Breeze Assistant Principal Elizabeth Hill-Brodigan.

One dog that could use a boost is Billie - a 2 year old, 62 lb mixed breed that has been at the shelter a while despite his beautiful coat and endearing face. Billie is up to date on shots and neutered - this large show stopper is ready to go!

Billie and his friends are located at the BCSO shelter at 5100 W Eau Gallie Blvd in Melbourne Florida. The shelter is open from 11am to 6pm Monday through Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sundays.
