Renovating Mall Retail Space For Office Space Becoming a Trend

McCree General Contractors in Orlando, Fla. part of national trend of converting retail space in shopping malls to office space.

Orlando, Fla., March 5, 2018 – McCree General Contractors & Architects, Inc. completed a renovation in the West Oaks Mall in Ocoee, Fla., transforming the former location of the Belk department store into a Bed Bath & Beyond call center in October, 2017. The 35,000 square foot space is just one example of the growing trend of shopping malls converting former retail shops into office space.

A recent study by JLL shows that mall owners across the U.S. are investing billions in renovating their assets to meet the needs of the modern consumer. While these projects come with risks, the report makes a case for their rewards as it examined over 90 malls of which the majority have undergone a makeover, including at least common area improvements, rebranding or tenant upgrades over the last three years.

Medical centers and call centers are a popular option when it comes to spicing up the tenant mix, giving malls more of an office park vibe, providing a sense of community and consistent traffic on daily basis to existing retailers in the malls.

“Retail is constantly changing, and the traditional shopping malls are changing with it,” said Richard McCree Jr., Chief Principal of the Bed Bath & Beyond renovation project and CEO of McCree General Contractors & Architects, Inc. “The West Oaks Mall ownership is forward-thinking as this project has brought jobs and traffic on a daily basis to the facility. It really is a great environment to work, and we can expect to see more of this,” he added.

Bed Bath & Beyond’s call center is the second to make its home in the mall since Xerox opened a SunPass customer service center in September 2016.
