Tabernacle Choir Organist comes to Central Florida
Free Tabernacle Choir Organist Concert in Orlando
Dr. Richard Elliott is the Principal Organist for the Tabernacle Choir is presenting an organ concert Friday, April 17th at the First United Methodist Church at 142 East Jackson Street in Orlando. Admission is free. Doors open at 6:15pm and the concert is at 7:30pm. Parking is available at the Orange County parking garage across the street from the east side at Rosalind and Jackson Streets. For the past 35 years he has accompanied the Choir on their weekly radio and television broadcasts for “Music and the Spoken Word”. He can be heard on dozens of CD’s and DVD’s as well as the Christmas broadcasts each year on PBS.
Before becoming a Tabernacle organist, he was an assistant organ professor at Brigham Young University. For several years he served as assistant organist at the John Wanamaker department store [later Macy’s] in Philadelphia, home of the world’s largest fully-functioning pipe organ. A native of Baltimore, he received his early training at the Peabody Conservatory and the Catholic University of America. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and MM and DMA degrees from Eastman School of Music.
His Orlando concert will present music by Mozart, Bach, Vierne, Durufle, Portman, Hebble and Elliott. You will hear an age-old tradition for the noonday recitals at Temple Square in the Tabernacle and Conference Center. The organist plays an arrangement or their improvisation on the beloved Mormon hymn “Come, Come Ye Saints.” On the lighter side the audience will enjoy some of Elliott’s jazz and familiar lighter arrangements.

January 1983 was the last time the Principal Tabernacle Organist, John Longhurst, performed in concert in Orlando. It is an honor and joy to present Dr. Elliott in concert on the magnificent four-manual pipe organ in the marvelous acoustical setting at First United Methodist Church in downtown Orlando. For decades he has been inspiring audiences worldwide.
