The Watermark at Vistawilla Celebrates Active Aging with Dance
Local assisted living and memory care community celebrated Active Aging week with a week of dance classes
The Watermark at Vistawilla, an assisted living and memory care community in Winter Springs, celebrated Active Aging Week from October 1 to October 7 with a week of unique dance classes. The celebration, appropriately called “Vistawilla Loves to Dance,” incorporated many styles of dance for all interests and activity levels.
Residents, associates and guests joined together and learned the art of ballroom dancing, pole dancing, hip-hop, salsa, ballet, line dancing, and pom dancing. Pole dancing was a favorite among residents, who surprised themselves with both their ability and enthusiasm for the dance.
“The class gave residents the opportunity to view the art of pole dancing in a different light,” said Karen Donnelly, Community Life Director at The Watermark at Vistawilla. “Participants brought an open mind and a vibrant energy to the class – and they loved it. We're always trying new and different things, and sometimes the residents surprise me with what they like. This was no exception.”

At the end of the week, residents were joined by the Winter Springs High School dance team. The team of 23 dancers performed for residents and taught them a routine using their signature poms. The team performs and competes throughout the school year, while attending practice and dance camps during the summer.
“When we said we liked to dance, we sure meant it!” said Donnelly. “Residents were up and on their feet all week, dancing and celebrating what it means to be an active adult of retirement age.”

Active Aging Week, which is held yearly during the first week of October, is a weeklong campaign that calls attention to and wholeheartedly celebrates the positivity of aging today. It challenges society’s diminished expectations of aging by showing that, regardless of age or health conditions, adults over 50 can live as fully as possible in all areas of life—physical, social, spiritual, emotional, intellectual, vocational and environmental.
The Watermark at Vistawilla supports the mission of Active Aging Week year-round through its many programs, classes, events and outings that are designed to help seniors thrive. For more information on The Watermark at Vistawilla, visit vistawilla.watermarkcommunities.com.
