📰 News we're reading

1. DeSantis vetoes $2.5 million in Seminole County budget projects (prismnews.com) — State budget vetoes just wiped out funding for safety upgrades at two busy Oviedo crossings, along with Seminole County water meter improvements and school gun-detection software. Planned fixes at Lockwood Boulevard and Fallbrook Drive, plus State Road 434 at Boardwalk Avenue, are now on hold while the city waits for another chance at state money.

2. Oviedo plans for major revenue hit from proposed property tax cut (prismnews.com) — Oviedo is bracing for a potential multimillion-dollar hit to its budget if voters approve a statewide property tax exemption increase this November, forcing choices about services, staffing, and new fees. The city collected about $24.6 million in property taxes last year and estimates losing roughly $5.1 million in 2027-28 alone, while Seminole County faces even steeper projected losses.

3. Oviedo moves to predict flooding before it happens with new $216K tech system (clickorlando.com) — Oviedo leaders are set to vote on a $216,000 FloodWise forecasting system that could predict neighborhood flooding along the Econ River and Sweetwater Creek days before storms hit. The mayor is skeptical about the cost, so residents who care about flood risks are urged to speak up at tonight’s 6:30 p.m. City Hall meeting.

4. Oviedo Mall one step closer to building 700 apartment units (wesh.com) — Oviedo Mall is moving ahead with plans to add about 700 apartments on its property, including demolishing the Macy’s building for the first 400 units and a new mall entrance. Privately funded developers say the $100 million project could revive the mall and concentrate growth away from nearby neighborhoods, with construction targeted to start in early 2027 pending city approvals.
