Watch: Would-Be Robber Pays for Candy, Leaves When Asked

While the man didn't get away with anything, Pinellas deputies would still like to talk to him.

It isn’t every day that a robber walks into a store, waits in line patiently, pays for a purchase and then leaves when asked.

That, however, is what Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies say happened in a case back in November that they’re still trying to close. The sheriff’s office released a video of the suspect Friday, Dec. 19, in hopes someone will recognize the man they’d like to speak to in regard to the attempted robbery at a Palm Harbor 7-Eleven.

The incident in question unfolded Nov. 15 at the 38593 U.S. 19 N. store. Deputies say the man entered the store around 9 p.m., helped himself to a candy bar and then approached the counter to pay.

On the video, the man is seen waiting his turn as customers before him are helped. Once he made it to the register, the man, deputies say, paid for the candy, but also demanded cash in return.

While patient, he wasn’t necessarily polite, an email to media from the sheriff’s office pointed out.

“Once the clerk refused, the suspect then made additional demands and threats to harm the clerk,” the email said.

When the clerk asked him to leave, however, “the suspect left the store without any money and fled on foot.”

Deputies describe the suspect as a man who stands about 5-foot-1. He has a thin build and weighs about 115 pounds. The man is said to have short hair, possibly a buzz cut, and has a tattoo on his neck under his left ear.

Anyone who can identify the man is asked to call Det. J. Miller at 727-582-6200. Tips may also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS or by going online to www.crimestoppersofpinellas.org.
