"When we take care of people first, the rest will follow," she said.

On Tuesday, Burton told commissioners that 15 Pinellas nursing home residents from St. Pete Nursing and Rehabilitation and Gulf Shore Care Center were evacuated to local hospitals after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Burton said the Department of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Administration are working with the facilities to control the spread of the virus and conduct testing on all staff and patients.

As Florida slowly reopens, nursing facilities remain closed because elderly residents and those with pre-existing medical conditions are the most vulnerable to the coronavirus.
