• Punta Gorda Man Arrested on Felony Animal Cruelty Charges After Puppy Abuse Video Tip – WENG 98.1FM, 107.5 FM & 1530 AM (wengradio.com) — A Punta Gorda man has been arrested on felony aggravated animal cruelty and probation violation charges after deputies received a tip about a video allegedly showing him abusing his 6‑week‑old puppy. Charlotte County investigators say additional abuse videos were found during a home search, and they're urging Suncoast residents, including those in Punta Gorda, to promptly report any suspected animal cruelty to local authorities.
   

• Despite reducing tax rates, operating budget up by $33 million (yoursun.com) — Charlotte County commissioners have slightly reduced the property tax millage rate while still increasing the county's operating budget to $704 million for fiscal year 2027, and the final budget hearing is set in Punta Gorda on Sept. 28. Local residents, especially homeowners and those on fixed incomes, may want to weigh in on the proposed tax rate, sales tax extension, and spending priorities at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center.
   

• HISTORY COLUMN: Our harbor was named for an English queen (yoursun.com) — Punta Gorda residents are invited to the Charlotte County Historical Society's Low Country Boil on Sept. 26 at the Punta Gorda Woman's Club, with tickets available online. The column also dives into how Charlotte Harbor got its royal name, tracing early maps, explorers, and the evolution of the harbor's identity, with more historic maps available through the Punta Gorda History Center.
