Four years ago, when Judy Schneider first laid eyes on Oliver, a seven year old German Spitz, she immediately knew he was special. She quickly adopted the 25 pounder from the SPCA in Largo, where he ended up after being rescued when Hurricane Ike hit Austin, TX in 2008. Judy lovingly calls the golden haired Oliver, “a Pom on steroids” because of his size, his Pomeranian dance moves, and how he acts like a real clown.
After taking Oliver to local dog parks and walks around her neighborhood, Judy realized he was friendlier than many other dogs. He made kids smile and wanted to share Oliver with others. She contacted Therapy Dogs International and discovered the Tail Waggin’ Tutor program. Oliver passed all behavioral tests and became a certified Tail Waggin’ Tutor, beginning his career at the Safety Harbor Public Library almost two years ago.

The main objective of Tail Waggin’ Tutors is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, allowing children to practice their reading. Often students are self-conscious when reading aloud in front of other classmates and reading to a canine companion can help. A dog doesn’t correct or laugh. When a child sits next to a dog and reads, all threats of being judged are put aside. Not to mention the perks of petting your furry, listening friend, while reading in a fun environment.
In addition to his job as a reading tutor at the Library, Oliver is a certified therapy dog and visits Mease Countryside Hospital and Regency Oaks Assisted Living. He recently entered two obedience competitions and won two trophies in the novice division, and because he likes a challenge, Oliver also has taken several agility courses.
