SARASOTA, FL — A Sarasota 18-year-old is facing felony and misdemeanor charges after police said he was found early Saturday morning near a vehicle with its door open and later ran from officers during an overnight search.
Jaquez Burrows was arrested on charges of burglary of an unoccupied vehicle, loitering and prowling, and resisting an officer without violence, Sarasota police said in a news release.
Officers responded to the area of South Osprey Avenue around 12:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a suspicious person who may have been armed with a firearm.
A resident told officers that he heard noises outside his home, and when he opened the front door, he saw Burrows standing next to his brother’s vehicle with the driver’s side door open.
The resident reported seeing what appeared to be a holster in Burrows’ waistband before the suspect left the area.
Dispatch told responding officers the suspect was wearing black clothing and a ski mask and was riding a black scooter.
Officers later saw a person matching that description traveling south on Alta Vista Street and South Orange Avenue on a scooter, police said.
Police set up a perimeter and requested help from Air 1, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office helicopter.
Burrows ran from officers for several minutes but was tracked by Air 1. Officers arrested him near Pomelo Avenue and Alta Vista Street.
During a search, officers found two 13-round Glock handgun magazines in Burrows’ pocket, police said. The magazines did not have any ammunition. Officers also recovered a large amount of cash from his pocket.
No firearm was found on Burrows at the time of the arrest.
Later that day, at about 7:45 p.m., officers conducting a follow-up canvass found a firearm in a holster behind a home near where Burrows was arrested, investigators said.
Police identified it as a Glock Model 23 Gen 4, .40 caliber. Officers found 13 rounds of .40-caliber ammunition in the magazine that was in the firearm.
The gun was collected as evidence and submitted for DNA analysis.
Burrows was taken to the Sarasota County Jail after his arrest.
He bonded out of jail on Monday and is scheduled to return to court for arraignment on June 26.
