'It was always in the front of my mind': Sarasota firefighters, community climb stairs to honor 9/11 victims (mysuncoast.com) — Hundreds of Sarasota-area residents and firefighters gathered at Nathan Benderson Park for the first organized 9/11 stair climb, honoring nearly 3,000 victims and 343 fallen firefighters. Participants climbed more than 200 steps at the park's tower, turning an informal annual tribute into a large, coordinated event organizers hope will become a lasting local tradition.
5. Retired SRQ air traffic controller recalls his role on 9/11 (mysuncoast.com) — A retired air traffic controller from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport is sharing how he cleared Air Force One for takeoff on 9/11, helping get the president safely airborne from SRQ. He recalls the confusion, quick decisions, and even an earlier encounter with hijacker Mohamed Atta in the Sarasota control tower, offering a rare local perspective on that historic day.
