Join the Manasota Chess Center on Fridays from 3 to 7pm at The Bay Park in downtown Sarasota for our free outdoor meetups. Take advantage of these great opportunities to play chess, socialize, and have fun.
All ages and skill levels are welcome to the chess meetups. Parents of youth/kids attending meetups must be present for their children to participate.
LOGISTICS:
Please bring your own chess set, and a chess clock if you want to play speed chess.
Within the park, the meetup location is next to the Ibis Playground on the Blvd of the Arts side of the park and close to the Sarasota Bay.

Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens: “The New Generation of Musical Theater,” featuring Hermitage Fellows Adam Chanler-Berat and Julian Hornik, Wednesday, May 6, 6:30pm: Adam Chanler-Berat, a celebrated Broadway and television actor as well as a playwright, is known for originating leading roles in Next to Normal, Peter and the Starcatcher, and Amélie, as well as appearing as Jordan Glassberg on HBO’s Gossip Girl. Returning Hermitage Fellow Julian Hornik has developed work with Hermitage Fellow Mark Sonnenblick and is a recipient of the Jonathan Larson Grant from the American Theatre Wing. These two extraordinary talents are frequent collaborators and rising stars in the New York musical theater world. They are now here at the Hermitage developing a new musical together. Join us for the final “Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens” program of the season as we hear these celebrated artists talk about their creative process and share original songs. Presented in partnership with Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Hermitage Sunsets @ Selby Gardens: “The New Generation of Musical Theater”

David Hunihan, CEO of Lee Wetherington Homes, will be leading a <a href="https://www.nationaldayofprayer.org/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">National Day of Prayer</a> event program at Gateway Park in Waterside Place at Lakewood Ranch, on Thursday, May 7, 2026. 
The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people to pray for the nation. It was created in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. 
Presented by CityCommit and Lee Wetherington Homes, the public is encouraged to bring their own chairs and towels and join the two organizations as they come together with the community in prayer. 
The one-hour event program will be as follows:

Explore the principal styles and stylistic influences of American, European, and Asian silver. Andrew will provide a historic overview of when the world’s thirst for silver bullion grew to epidemic proportions from the late 16th century to the latest fashion amongst today’s master silversmiths. Learn about silver hallmarks and how to distinguish between early masterpieces and later reproductions. This session will feature an exceptional collection of over 100 objects ranging over six centuries of sterling silver accoutrements from Andrew’s personal silver collection. This session will culminate in addressing the conservation and soaring precious metals markets, as well as how to navigate buying and selling in today’s ever-changing valuations.

Baroque Treasures – on Mother’s Day – begins with harpsichordist Paulo Bordignon performing music of Bach and Couperin. Then Sarasota Orchestra principal oboe Bobby Nunes and principal harp Phoebe Powell, accompanied by strings and harpsichord, each perform a concerto for their instrument by baroque master G.F. Handel. The two also join forces for Debussy’s enchanting Album of Five Pieces for Oboe and Harp. Single ticket: $50 and $70 (VIP seating). Sponsored by The Lara and Mark D’Agostino Family Fund.
