Dad Who Killed Intruder Faces Gun Charges

Sarasota deputies say he's a convicted felon.

The 36-year-old Sarasota father who shot and killed an intruder at his Ernie Shank Court home Tuesday now faces criminal charges himself.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, Christopher Bane is a convicted felon who is not allowed by law to possess a firearm.

Bane shot and killed Calvin Yoder, 22, Tuesday. Deputies say Yoder broke into Bane’s home around 5:40 a.m. Bane, who was home with his 11-year-old child, pulled out a gun. When Yoder fired at Bane, his shot missed. Bane shot back, however, and hit the mark.

Yoder was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies arrested Bane Thursday morning after discovering he was convicted in 2001 on possession of marijuana with intent to sell charges. That case originated in Manatee County.

Bane told investigators he was not aware he was a convicted felon, according to an arrest affidavit.

Bane had yet to be booked into the Sarasota County Jail as of Thursday afternoon, but arrest records show he is being charged with one count of felony possession of a firearm.
