FL Girl Denied Entry To Prom For Wearing Suit: Reports

A teenage girl in Naples was denied entry to her high school prom for wearing a suit, which violated the school's dress code, reports said.

NAPLES, FL — A Florida teenager was denied entry to her high school prom for wearing a suit, according to multiple reports.

Sophie Savidge, 16, a junior at Mason Classical Academy, a public charter school in Naples, was told her suit violated the school’s dress code.

For formal events, girls are only allowed to wear gowns, dresses and one-piece attire, according to WINK News. These guidelines are taught to students at the school starting in the sixth grade.

I was so upset,” the high schooler’s mother, Holly Savidge, told NBC News. “I said, ‘Sophie doesn’t wear dresses. She doesn’t like to wear dresses — it’s just not her.’ And [the vice principal] said, ‘Well, unfortunately, those are the rules.’”

The girl said that she was “shocked” by the school’s decision to not allow her to enter the dance because she was wearing a suit, adding, “I didn’t think that it was going to be a problem.”

Sophie previously wore suits to school events, including a Valentine’s Day dance in February.

"Mason Classical Academy has clear dress code guidelines for all dances. The dress codes are clearly presented and outlined to all students and parents,” the school said in a statement provided to NBC-2. “Any student who shows up to an MCA dance and does not abide by the dress code is given the opportunity to return to the dance in the proper attire. All students are treated equally at MCA and are welcome and encouraged to attend these voluntary events."

To make up for missing prom, Sophie is planning to go out with friends for a fancy dinner, WMBF reported.

She told NBC News that she hopes other teens will also “stick up for what they believe in.”

“Keep on pushing through even if other people don’t agree with how they want to express themselves,” she said.
