National Discount Grocery Chain To Open New Sarasota County Store

A national grocery chain known for its low prices is under construction in southern Sarasota County.

SARASOTA COUNTY, FL — An Aldi grocery store is coming to Wellen Park, a master-planned community in southern Sarasota County, according to a news release.

A 12,000-square-foot store is under construction in Venice Plaza, a new commercial shopping plaza at U.S. 41 and Mexxo Drive, near the Costco building.

The store is expected to open by the summer, though an exact date wasn’t provided.

“The addition of Aldi reflects our continued commitment to expanding the variety of shopping choices in Wellen Park,” Rick Severance, the community’s president, said. “Providing our residents and the surrounding area with convenient access to everyday essentials at a range of price points is an important part of supporting Wellen Park’s continued growth.”

Known for its everyday low prices, exclusive brands and efficient store layout, Aldi offers organic meats, fresh produce, sustainable seafood, cheese and wine selections, and food for every taste and lifestyle, from gluten-free to plant-based.

Shoppers will also discover weekly offerings of limited-time ALDI Finds like seasonal food, home goods and more.   

More than 90 percent of the products sold at its stores are Aldi-exclusive brands, the company said.

“We’re excited to bring Aldi to Wellen Park and look forward to providing shoppers with easier access to quality groceries at affordable prices,” Matt Thon, the company’s regional vice president, said.

ALDI experienced explosive growth in 2025, opening nearly 200 new stores. With more than 2,600 locations, it is the third-largest U.S. grocer by store count.
